Music teacher Sandro Tognatti, 57, died the day after receiving the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

The cause is unclear, but as a precautionary measure, the Italian authorities have detained a batch of almost 400,000 doses.

– We must continue to believe in the vaccine, says Sandro Tognatti’s wife.

The Astra Zeneca vaccine has been suspended in several countries following blood clot alarms. The countries have made the decisions individually; neither the European Medicines Agency EMA nor the Swedish Medicines Agency have so far called for the interruption of vaccination.

In a press release on Thursday, the Medical Products Agency wrote that the stop concerned a batch of one million doses (ABV5300) delivered to 17 EU countries, including Sweden. The authority urges calm:

“The assessment is that the benefits of the vaccine clearly outweigh the risks. As of March 9, 22 cases of blood clots had been reported among the 3 million people vaccinated with the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine in Europe. There is currently no established link between vaccination and the appearance of blood clots ”.

Wife: “He wasn’t breathing”

The death in northern Italy is related to another batch (ABV5811) of 393,000 doses detained regionally by Piedmont authorities. The decision was a precautionary measure because the cause of Sandro Tognatti’s death is still unknown, says Corriere della serra.

The 57-year-old man and his wife Simona Riussi received the Astra Zeneca vaccine last Saturday. At night he had a fever and the next morning the situation was so serious that he called an ambulance.

– When I went to look at him, I noticed that he was not breathing. The ambulance arrived but to no avail. They took him away and I’ll never see him again. It is difficult to assimilate what happened, says Simona Riussi to the Notizie newspaper.

“I believed in the vaccine”

Now she wants the cause of her husband’s death to be fully investigated, but does not accuse Astra Zeneca:

– We must continue to believe in the vaccine because it is the only way out of this situation. My husband believed in that too.

Simona Riussi, also a music teacher, says it’s not alarming with a few dozen suspected side effects out of a total of several million doses of vaccines.

– It is known that there may be side effects of vaccines, but that is the only way to get us out of the pandemic. He really wanted to get back to work and meet the students again. I hope we can find out what happened so we can move on and get out of this situation, he says.
