Sources speak of animals being killed, lacking body parts, or sold to customers even though they are sick.
Three years ago, the county administrative board received a similar alarm, but decided not to visit Zoo.se
– We have to prioritize a lot, says Joakim Johansson, unit manager.
Aftonbladet and Viafree’s 200-second show has examined animal handling on Zoo.se.
Since 2010, the Stockholm County Administrative Board has received 26 animal welfare reports on physical stores.
During several unannounced inspections, the control authority has also confirmed deficiencies, such as sick animals and reduced storage.
In March 2018, an anonymous report was made with similar information that now appears for 200 seconds. Even then, they were sick animals, killed by staff and kept in staff rooms. The neglect had been going on for at least six months, according to the report.
Despite the fact that the county administrative board had previously discovered deficiencies in animal husbandry during unannounced visits, they chose to call the executive director and ask questions over the phone.
– Even if someone anonymously claims that animals are being killed incorrectly, we will not detect it with a check. In this case, we judge that we could probably access the real animal welfare deficiency in another way, says Joakim Johansson, unit manager at the Stockholm County Administrative Board.
But the report also referred to sick animals and animals that were too crowded in their cages and fought with each other.
How can you tell if it’s true without even visiting it?
– There may be reasons to look at that. We don’t have the resources to do more checking, but we have to prioritize a lot.
The County Administrative Board has received photographs of the dead animals and will now review the new information on Zoo.se, but cannot say how.
– We cannot draw conclusions based on reports, but there is reason to question whether many animals die in a short time.
