The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has issued a class 4 warning in the area of Kebnekaise in Norrbotten and Västra Vindelfjällen in Västerbotten, which means that very dangerous avalanche conditions are considered to prevail. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency advises against staying on or near rugged terrain for the next 24 hours.
The night before Wednesday, a large avalanche broke out near the Kebnekaise hill station, stopping just before reaching the houses. After a storm, several spontaneous avalanches occurred on the south and southeast slopes, large enough to bury a human, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
In Vindelfjällen, rainfall, strong winds and snowdrifts are expected, increasing stress on the already weak layers. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the importance of a skier or snowmobile is enough to trigger an avalanche.
“Also avoid traveling down steep slopes. This is especially true in narrow valleys. Especially avoid areas with a thin blanket of snow or near protruding rocks or boulders,” they write on the Avalanche Forecasts website.
In other forecast areas, avalanche hazard is estimated to be equivalent to a Class 3 warning, meaning there is significant avalanche hazard.
