It was a quarter to seven when the police received multiple alarms that a car was traveling in the wrong direction on the E20 in Åkers Styckebruk. The motorist drove in the direction of Stockholm but on the wrong side of the road.
Several accidents occurred along the road, a total of five cars are involved.
– One of the drivers of these cars is to blame for the accidents. But we have not yet managed to question him, he is being treated at the hospital, says Angelica Israelsson Silfver, a police spokeswoman.
Nine people in total they have been in the cars and five of them, including the driver suspected of driving in the wrong direction, have been taken by ambulance to hospital.
Some of them are seriously injured and others slightly, according to the police who do not want to give more details.
The police have started a report for causing bodily injury, gross negligence in traffic and driving while intoxicated.
The accidents caused a stop on the E20, four rescuers were needed on the scene and road conditions required extensive repair.
Shortly after 8 p.m., some lanes could reopen to traffic.
