– Fear and terror should never be part of our daily lives, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said during a press conference on Thursday.

– A person has been arrested and it is not yet clear what motives are behind, says Interior Minister Mikael Damberg.

The police are now preparing to conduct interrogations.

– The police authority is now taking measures to create security in the area, says Mikael Damberg.

The alleged perpetrator, who is in his 20s, is said to have attacked an object at five different locations in the city of Småland shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon. A total of seven people were injured by the perpetrator, three of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the Jönköping region health service.

The man himself is also being treated at the hospital after the police shot him during his intervention. The author, who is being monitored at the hospital, was previously known to the police for a misdemeanor.

The perpetrator’s attack is being investigated as an assassination attempt and it was announced during lunchtime on Thursday that the perpetrator had been arrested, a suspect in a total of seven attempted murder cases. The motive is still being investigated and the Säpo is still involved, but the events are not being investigated as a terrorist crime at this time.

During the night until Thursday, the police conducted a house search in an apartment in the area.

– We received several calls about an ongoing attack in the center of Vetlanda. All available resources are arranged there. About three minutes after the first patrol arrives, we can locate a suspect. In connection with the arrest, a service weapon is fired, Jonas Lindell, area chief of the local Höglandet police, said at a news conference Wednesday night.

In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven writes that he condemns what happened.

“I condemn this horrible violence. We meet these heinous acts with the collective power of society,” he writes, among other things.
