There is a great danger of avalanches in the mountains. Further north, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has issued a class 4 warning in Abisko / Riksgränsenfjällen and in Kebnekaise.
It is windy in the mountains of northern Lapland and there will be villages heavy with rain or snow. According to the avalanche forecast, even before the storm, the snow cover is very weak and sensitive and “many large avalanches” are expected under the weight of new snow.
– Our advice is not only to stay completely clear of steep off-road terrain, but also to avoid staying under it, says Per-Olov Wikberg from the avalanche forecasting service of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to SVT Nyheter Norrbotten.
In the mountains of southern Lapland, western Vindelfjällen, southern Jämtlandsfjällen and western Härjedalsfjällen, there is a significant avalanche hazard, corresponding to one third of the risk scale.
In Jämtlandsfjällen, experts estimate that snowfall and high winds make it “likely” that there will be human-caused avalanches on rugged terrain on Tuesday and skiers are urged to be very careful.
