Already in utero, the heart defect was discovered in the girl to be born and given the name Will. She was operated on for the first time when she was just a few days old. In October 2019, when Vilja was eight months old, it was time for the next procedure. The operation was well planned and Vilja’s parents moved with her to the patient hotel in Gothenburg.
But seven times the procedure was postponed. Emergency patients had to go first.
– During the days in Sahlgrenska she became sad and tired. Still, we had to wait. I asked a nurse if it had to go wrong for something to happen, says Vilja’s mother, Pernilla Hedman.
November 2 found the parents Will lifeless in bed. She had died in her sleep. A few days ago Ivo’s decision in the case arrived, something that Göteborgs-posten was the first to report. The Health and Care Inspectorate criticizes Sahlgrenska on several points. The hospital has failed to “plan, direct and control operations in a way that leads to the maintenance of the need for good care.”
– It’s heavy, but I hope that the least this can lead to is that no other family should be involved in the same thing, says Vilja’s father, Marcus Lundqvist.
The Sahlgrenska children’s heart center has a principle of not commenting on individual cases, but Ivo’s criticism points to something that also frustrates the staff.
– Everyone involved is trying their best, but with current resources we cannot enforce the law, says operations manager Mats Synnergren.
Emergency operations it often means that planned interventions need to be postponed. Although it almost always goes well, it means a lot of stress, according to the operations manager.
– This is an issue that must be raised. We have a national shortage of intensive care units and children’s surgical capacity. It should be doubled, says Mats Synnergren.
It refers, among other things, to the review of the National Health and Welfare Council, which took place a couple of years ago, where the medical and technical quality of care is valued as “high international class”, but where reject ability.
– It’s national misconduct. There are very few IVA sites in our country for all advanced pediatric care.
In Will’s case the hospital is also criticized for keeping inadequate records. These are opinions that the heart center absorbs and now clarifies its routines.
Vilja’s family has been to a follow-up meeting in Sahlgrenska, but does not believe they have received an apology or repairs from the hospital.
– We haven’t gotten that far in our pain. We have been stuck waiting for the investigation. Now I’m even angrier because Ivo says we were right. It should have been operated. I already thought he was the difficult parent, but now I wonder if I should have demanded more, says Pernilla Hedman.
