Relief for vaccinated elderly at SÄBO

About 82 percent of older people in special housing have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine and 70 percent have received two doses. At the same time, both the number of illnesses and deaths have decreased rapidly in special housing.

At a press conference at lunchtime Thursday, the Public Health Agency announced that there are many indications that the reduction is an effect of vaccination.

In this context, the authority assesses that people in special accommodation can physically meet asymptomatic relatives near their home two weeks after receiving the second dose of vaccine.

However, Johan Carlsson, Director General of the Swedish Public Health Agency, points out that this is not a general relief for other groups that have received vaccines, such as health workers.

According to Johan Carlsson, one of the reasons is that there is not yet a complete understanding of how the vaccine protects against the spread of infection.

– The reason why we repeal this regulation for the elderly is that they themselves, when visiting their room, do not contribute in the same way to the spread of the infection. As for others who have received the vaccine, the same rules apply as before.

At a press conference later on Thursday, the Swedish Public Health Agency presented more detailed statistics on vaccines and on the situation around covid-19 in Sweden.

To date, 454,996 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 235,275 have received two doses, according to reported data.

As for the number of covid-19 cases in Sweden, there is now a clear increase.

“Unfortunately, we are likely to see some increase this week as well compared to the previous week,” said state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.

The burden on healthcare is healthcare currently in a plateau phase. According to the latest figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare, more than 1,300 people are treated in hospitals with covid-19.

233 covid patients are cared for in intensive care. That’s eight more compared to last week.

– We have this plateau at a very high level, which causes concern, said Iréne Nilsson Carlsson, of the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Despite the precarious health care situation, Anders Tegnell is cautiously positive when it comes to the development on the number of deaths from covid-19.

– We have relatively few new deaths in recent days. They are still quite high levels, but a development that is promising, says Anders Tegnell.

A total of 12,798 people have died with COVID-19 in Sweden.
