In Sweden, a further increase in the spread of the infection can be seen, Anders Tegnell said on Tuesday. At the same time, the presence of the B.1.1.7 virus variant, which was first discovered in the UK, is now widespread in Sweden. As in several other countries, the variant is spreading rapidly in the country.

– International experience suggests that this is a variant that is likely to be dominant in most countries, at least in Europe, within a few weeks to a month.

However, the Public Health Agency does not consider that the spread of the British virus variant affects the effectiveness of the vaccine.

– What can be said with the British version, there is no risk. It seems to work just as well. There is very clear data from the UK on this, says Anders Tegnell.

– We can also see in several neighboring countries that the measures we have in place also work well to prevent its spread. In this way, it is more controllable.

After an in-depth analysis, they could The first Swedish case of the P.1 virus variant, which was first discovered in Brazil, will be confirmed on Friday. Four people from two different families in Gävleborg have been infected.

The spread of the variant, on the other hand, is low, according to Anders Tegnell. This also applies to the South African variant, B.1.351.

The state of knowledge on the two variants is also significantly worse than for the British.

– We know much less about the Brazilian and the South American and what their potential is both to take charge and to tackle other problems, says Anders Tegnell.

Four regions – Gävleborg, Västerbotten, Sörmland and Stockholm – have now chosen to introduce stricter recommendations after the increasing spread of the infection. Among other things, the number of close contacts will be limited and mouth guards will be used on public transportation 24 hours a day.

The Public Health Agency will present a package of national measures on Wednesday, Anders Tegnell announced at the press conference without going into more details about the content.

Tuesday it was reported another 64 deaths among people infected with covid-19 in Sweden. A total of 12,713 Swedes have died during the pandemic, according to the latest figures from the Public Health Agency.

10,933 new cases of the virus have been confirmed in the country. This means that 642,099 people have tested positive for covid-19.

The Swedish Public Health Agency updates its figures every day from Tuesday to Friday. Therefore, the figures for Tuesday also apply to Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Nearly 650,000 doses of vaccines have been distributed in Sweden. Almost 220,000 people have received both doses of the vaccine.

– Vaccinations continue excellently, says Anders Tegnell, who emphasizes that the rate of vaccination depends entirely on the delivery of doses from pharmaceutical companies.
