Strong criticism after the deaths in Berga

During the spring, attention turned to Berga’s special home in Solna when the infection escalated and many older people died.

Last week the review of the nursing home that the city of Solna promised this spring was presented. The review, on which Lokaltidningen Mitt i was the first to report, points to several reasons why the virus spread in the accommodation.

Elisabet sundelin, operations manager of the Solna nursing administration, says the most important explanation was that the infection arrived so early in Berga.

– It was an unknown disease and the symptoms seemed different from what we received for the first time, he says.

Another reason for the spread of the infection, noted in the report, is that people have been ill with no symptoms and that testing was done to a limited extent.

According to the review, there were however, circumstances that Responsibility and Care could have affected if the contractor had had better planning of personnel and protective equipment. Both officials and politicians agree that the municipality should have ensured that it had a larger stock of the latter.

Staff shortages are described in the report as one of the reasons the outbreak became so widespread in Berga. There is evidence that there were 39 people on sick leave at one time, out of the 48 people who were supposed to work.

The lack of medically competent staff is also highlighted as a factor in another recent review, from the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, Ivo. The decision establishes that in Berga there were no conditions to provide good care to the elderly with a suspected or established crown and that the record keeping has deficiencies that make it impossible to monitor the care process.

In the municipality review describes how the nurses had to do many difficult evaluations because the doctors were not physically present. The image is reinforced by the city of Solna, which also states that it was not always possible to communicate with a doctor by phone.

Family doctors, who provide medical care in Berga, received strong criticism from Ivo in December, among other things for the lack of assistance in several homes.

Stefan Amér, CEO of the company, uses Ivo’s description. He claims that they switched from physical meetings between doctors and nurses to watching digitally to reduce the spread of infection.

– Patients who doctors and nurses felt they should see a doctor physically were allowed to do so, he says.

For Ivo says a nurse that the chief of operations urged the nurses not to bring the patients into the wards. A nurse assistant working in the accommodation offers a similar picture.

– The nurses were not there, they sent medicines in the elevators. I don’t blame the nurses, this came from above, says DN’s auxiliary nurse.

One of the testimonies in Ivo’s review describes how patients had to wait for treatment or medication because nurses were lacking, and that it happened that residents died alone.

Elisabet Sundelin considers that parts of Ivo’s review are “unnecessarily sharp.” It highlights that some of the conclusions are based on interviews with individuals.

– They are harsh words, which Ivo notices that it has happened that the elderly have been found dead in their rooms. Older people die in nursing homes. In caring for the elderly we are good at palliative care.

According to the auxiliary nurse DN spoke with, the management of the accommodation has left much to be desired, even before the pandemic. It describes a bad attitude of the managers towards the personnel and that the criticisms that arise are not listened to.

He also criticizes the actions of management when the infection occurred.

– They did not support us, they did not let us enter their offices. They thought we had protective gear so it was enough, but we didn’t really have it. The first viewers we received had relatives willing for staff, not management.

The agreement with Responsibility & Care It expires at the end of this year, but already in February, politicians must decide whether or not to extend it. On Tuesday, the Social Democrats in the city of Solna demanded that the municipality not extend the agreement.

– During my time as a politician, I have never seen such harsh criticism of a company that does business on behalf of the municipality. So many people have lost their lives, says Sara Kukka-Salam, (S), opposition municipal councilor in Solna.

It’s too soon to say that how the municipality will land, says Samuel Klippfalk, chair of the care committee (KD).

– I agree that there was no order during the spring. But during the fall, when there was still a high spread of infection in the community, the accommodation, as I understand it, did not have an infection or death in the covid-19.

Klippfalk told the Mitt i newspaper in December that A&O was found not to have violated the agreement with the city of Solna. Now the picture is partly different.

– They have not complied with all parts of the agreement. They have not had the staff that they would have had everywhere. This is clear both in the IVO review and in the report. But then the question is, is it enough to rescind the agreement?
