The moderates want to increase the demand for damages to parents of children who commit crimes. The current amount of 9,500 SEK should be increased to 24,000 SEK, the party’s legal policy spokesman Johan Forssell tells TV4.

The lawsuit for damages was introduced in 2010 and means that parents are obliged to compensate the damages caused by their children through crime. The moderates believe that the current amount is too low.

– Crime is spreading lower and lower with age. I think if we want to access the underlying reasons for this, we need to get more parents to just take responsibility, Johan Forssell tells TV4.

The Crime Prevention Council (Brå) stated in a 2017 survey that there is no evidence that liability for damages has reduced juvenile delinquency. Brå also warned of the risk of it unevenly impacting financially weak families.

– Parental responsibility applies to everyone, regardless of income, says Johan Forssell.
