– You have no income. It’s difficult, because you don’t know how to pay off the house loans, says Mattias Bornstedt, who is one of the victims.
Mattias and many of his colleagues who work in Norwegian industry but live in Sweden have ended up in a strange situation.
They have a job, but they cannot get there due to the closed border between Norway and Sweden, and since they have a job, they cannot get unemployment insurance. According to estimates by the Norwegian authorities, it is about 6,000 people.
Furthermore, Norwegian companies cannot lay off their employees in the short term, as there is no shortage of work. So the result is that companies have difficulties with their production and the Swedes who are employed are completely without income.
Knut Sunde at the Norwegian trade association Norsk Industri is concerned. Both for companies and for those Swedes who do not receive a salary. He believes that companies are losing important skills and experienced employees.
– It is tragic for both Swedes and Norwegians and for companies on the Norwegian side, which have many Swedish employees. What can be said is that the regulations never thought of the idea that the border would be closed, he says.
Knut Sunde tells Ekot that several companies are considering how to solve the situation of Swedish employees who are completely without income.
A company The one who has already taken the initiative is Nexans, which has about 40 Swedes who cannot come to work. Kristin Hessen, who is an information manager there, says she understands that the border must be closed to stop the spread of the crown, but that both the company and employees are hit hard. Therefore, the company will pay the salaries, at least in February, even if the employees cannot come to work.
– This not only hurts us as a company, it also hurts our employees who we want to care for and we feel a responsibility to ensure that they do not suffer more damage than necessary, says Kristin Hessen.
But for Mattias Bornstedt There is currently no solution in sight and it is seriously affecting the economy.
– Yes, it can have consequences that you really don’t want to talk about. That you may not be able to pay the loans, that in the end you don’t have a house, he says.
