On the agenda was a civil law goal. But when Judge Roy Ferguson of Texas began Tuesday’s virtual hearing, he was met with an unexpected sight: two attorneys and a cat.

– Mr. Pontoon, I think you have a filter enabled in your video settings, says Ferguson, while the blue-eyed figure in the bottom right corner looks around in embarrassment.

– Aaah, answers the lawyer Rod Ponton, who hides behind the cat’s face, and adds with a stressed voice:

– Can you hear me?

In the other two boxes, attorneys H. Gibbs Bauer and Jerry L. Phillips watch without touching for a minute.

– I don’t know how to get it out, says Rod Ponton, and offers to continue the negotiation despite that.

– I’m alive here. I’m not a cat, Ponton adds, which finally makes his colleague Phillips smile.

The 394th Judicial District Court hearing could continue later as planned, after Ponton was assisted in turning off the filter.

The 69-year-old attorney, who represented the state of Texas in the case, says he doesn’t know how the filter was installed and says he used his assistant’s computer.

A recording of the accident has been widely disseminated on social media.

Rod Ponton says he’s paying attention.

“If I can make people laugh for a while in these difficult times, I will gladly let them do it at my expense,” he told The New York Times.
