Former US Secretary of State George Shultz, who was instrumental in ending the Cold War, has died, writes AFP.
Shultz was secretary of state during Ronald Reagan’s presidency from 1982 to 1989. He saw the diplomatic opportunity to establish contacts with then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, something of which he managed to convince Reagan. Relations between the two great powers had been on the verge of freezing.
The contacts were of great importance in the development of Europe in connection with the fall of communism.
Shultz came to have a continuing influence on US international politics even after his official retirement. He is considered to have been the architect behind what became President George W. Bush’s controversial military policy decision to use so-called preemptive strikes against potential opponents.
Shultz was also a minister in Richard Nixon’s government.
George Shultz turned 100 years old.
