New data show: Astra Zeneca effective in the elderly

The effect of the Astra Zeneca vaccine in people over 65 has been questioned. Because data on people in that age group was very sparse when the vaccine manufacturer conducted its phase 3 studies. When the vaccine was approved for use, several EU countries chose on their own initiative to condition approval and use the vaccine only in people under 65, including Sweden.

But UK experts say they have received new data from Astra Zeneca showing the vaccines are just as effective in people over 65 as they are in younger people.

– As more and more people participate in your studies, we have received more data from Astra Zeneca. There is no evidence that the effect is less in the elderly, says Munir Pirmohamed, chairman of the British think tank for the safety of the covid-19 vaccine, according to Reuters.

Be aware of shortcomings

Pirmohammed says the UK Medicines Agency MHRA was aware of the thin surface when the vaccine was approved for use in the UK, but adds:

– But even then there was no evidence that the effect was minor, he says.
