The moderates are furious about the new vaccination priorities.

Ulf Kristersson claims that groups are pitted against each other in society.

– Undocumented, should they go ahead in line because they are undocumented? That’s an incredibly dangerous way to do it.

The Swedish Public Health Agency announced yesterday that the order of priority for vaccination against covid-19 will be changed.

The change means, among other things, that those living in situations of social vulnerability should receive vaccines before the general public. The authority mentions, for example, homeless or undocumented people. The moderates are very critical of the new priorities. Party leader Ulf Kristersson believes the order is fuzzy.

– I think this is a very dangerous way of walking. Here you are on an incline, he says.

Really dangerous

Kristersson questions what individual data should be used on vulnerability, material conditions, psychosocial aspects and lifestyles to take into account. He also believes that it can delay the entire vaccination process and make it difficult for regions that already have a heavy workload to do.

Another objection is that social groups are pitted against each other.

– Should I go to the individual level and check what kind of vulnerability people live in? I think it’s very, very dangerous. In the same way that it is incredibly dangerous when the managers of various municipalities have used their position to lead the queue themselves. This creates a challenge to the basic justice of the entire vaccination program.

The problem is those who are afraid

Kristersson believes that general vaccination should be generalized and characterized by equality and equitable treatment. Several other moderates also criticize the statement from the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Maria M Stenergard, spokesperson for Moderate’s Social Security and Migration Policy, describes it as “unreasonable” in a tweetwhile Växjö’s moderate councilor Oliver Rosengren in a tweet he called “offensive”.

Don’t you think it’s reasonable for society to prioritize and help the most vulnerable?

– Of course, but the most reasonable way is to start with a really successful and large-scale information campaign that really reaches people who are afraid and do not want to be vaccinated. Thats the big problem. Run that campaign right away. It takes time to develop a willingness to get vaccinated, says Ulf Kristersson.

Aftonbladet has contacted the Public Health Agency for comment. CEO Johan Carlson commented on the amended recommendations during a press conference yesterday.

“Those with the greatest need for protection against COVID-19 should be offered the vaccine earlier than those with a lower risk of serious illness and death,” he said.
