US President Joe Biden signs new presidential decrees as the country’s newly appointed Minister of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, watches.
US President Joe Biden has signed three presidential decrees on migration. The purpose is to destroy the legislation of its representative Donald Trump that, among other things, led to the children being separated from their parents on the US border with Mexico.
During the presidential campaign, Joe Biden promised to withdraw a long list of immigration laws and orders from Donald Trump and make the United States a more immigrant-friendly country.
On Tuesday he signed three presidential decrees on the subject, and he did so with the words:
– Now we are beginning to work to undo the moral and national shame that brought with it the policy of the previous government, which literally, not figuratively, ripped children from the arms of their parents.
Reunite families
Although the Trump administration was forced to curb its zero tolerance policy introduced in 2018 due to massive criticism, also internally, hundreds of children are still separated from their parents after attempting to enter the United States without permission.
The zero tolerance policy was introduced for the stated purpose of deterrence.
Biden has now given orders to establish a special task force that will work exclusively to reunite the divided families.
That group will be headed by Alejandro Mayorkas, who on Tuesday was approved by the Senate as the country’s interior minister. He was then sworn in overnight by Vice President Kamala Harris.
Another presidential decree that was signed tries to resume the policy that Trump’s representative, Barack Obama, tried to follow, which was that migrants can apply for residence permits in the United States from their countries of origin.
“Delete an incorrect policy”
The third order refers to the integration of the millions of migrants who are already legally in the United States and the facilitation of applying for US citizenship.
At the same time, Biden must carefully balance his actions. If you’re going too fast, Republicans can delay work, including by filing lawsuits. Biden has come under fire from Republicans for signing many presidential orders to circumvent congressional lawmakers.
– Much has been said, not without reason, about the number of presidential decrees that I have signed. But it’s not about me writing new laws. I erase bad policy, Biden said at the White House with the newly signed orders next to him.
