This year’s upstart blackbird | GP

This year’s bird count is in full swing.

And as usual, it’s the chickadee that reigns supreme when about a third of the country’s bird food reports have come through. Blue tit and finch are tampas for second place.

The blackbird is the upstart this year. He finished outside the top ten last year, but this year he’s in fourth place.

The reason so many blackbirds have been seen is the mild start of winter. Anders Wirdheim from the Birdlife Sweden bird association doesn’t think blackbirds move now that it’s much colder.

– I don’t think they have the resources to move. If they are going to do a longer movement, they need to put a little layer of fat.

Last year’s surprise was the greenish one. He finished in second place. But this winter they haven’t seen many.

– They are basically outside of Sweden, they are very few this year. It probably has to do with the fact that they have already retired in large crowds in the fall and are now way down in Europe.

The bird count continues through Monday night.
