Last Monday, the wound after the femur operation healed enough that Malin Clausson’s father was released from the Varberg hospital. But he had a cough and fever, and since another patient had previously been shown to have covid-19, his father was tested.
– I thought they were doing a test not to send him home with the infection, says Malin. But it turned out to be almost the opposite. I fully understand that care is under pressure, but not even in my wildest imagination could I imagine it to be. You don’t think that’s true.
When Malin’s mother They told her that her husband was on his way home, although the test result had not yet come, they told her that the hospital, regardless of the result, could not hold him.
– There were no alternatives. Instead, the mother was urged to protect herself. They wanted to limit the infection in the hospital at all costs.
Malin Clausson’s mother was already able to read the positive test result in her husband’s digital diaries that same night.
– He made a bed in the living room and I did a bull race and bought visors and masks in a slight panic. Why didn’t they wait? Mom is also over 80 years old and is a risk group.
The first days the father was extremely demanding of care and despite the home care and home health care, Malin was also visiting her parents’ home during those days.
– Yes, I have deliberately exposed myself to risk, after avoiding contact for a whole year, like everyone else. But I worried terribly for my parents and felt like I couldn’t leave them high, he says.
Now, the older couple have lived together in the house for almost two weeks. And despite the precautions, the mother has also fallen ill.
– Care becomes his own executioner here, says Malin Clausson’s brother, Magnus Bengtsson. Now they have more diseases and more problems.
Magnus is a firefighter, but previously worked as an ambulance driver. He considers that dealing with the father is a clear sign that society lacks a holistic approach to the pandemic.
– It is as if we were sitting in a boat full of holes. Everyone takes tablespoons and the infection just moves. We have built the entire strategy on the basis of individual responsibility and this time it all landed on my mother.
According to the brothers, it was the mother who informed the home care and home care service that the husband had covid. Without that effort, more people would have been exposed to the infection. The information is confirmed by the responsible medical nurse of the municipality.
– Here, they have not followed the routines that exist to protect staff and families. Everyone who is discharged from hospital care is tested for COVID-19 and we should have known that answer in time. It’s not routine that’s lacking, it’s compliance, says Gun Andersson, Medically Responsible Nurse, Mas, in Varberg Township.
This is not the only thing either the case. During 14 days there have been two reports of similar deviations. Both apply to patients who have been discharged (infected) from Varberg Hospital and the reports from the municipality refer primarily to professional caregivers being exposed to risks. But the infection that affected Magnus Bengtsson and Malin Clausson’s 80-year-old mother is also under investigation.
– This should not happen, says Maria Ryberg Mo, infection control doctor in Halland. It is a socially dangerous disease and we all have a responsibility to ensure that the infection does not spread further. Only the risk of exposing a previously unexposed person in the risk group means that it is highly inappropriate.
Maria Ryberg Mo has contacted Varberg Hospital to make sure this is not repeated in the future. Helena Gladh is the hospital’s chief physician.
– We have not had a clear routine to draw attention to this. In the normal case, we focus on our patient and whether he can receive good aftercare at home. Now we have to find out if there are additional people that we also need to consider.
That the hospital has collapsed The information for the municipality is obvious, he says, but it remains to investigate why it happened, as well as what the alternative to home care would be.
– We can pay attention to the need, but the way to solve it should probably be different from case to case. We will need help from the municipalities to find, for example, a possible short-term home. It is very sad that family members have been exposed to an infection that could have been prevented, says the chief physician.
On Tuesday night, it was also discovered that Malin Clausson was infected with covid-19 and the parents are still ill.
