The last time Sweden won the World Cup gold it was Magnus Wislander on the field.
Now he follows the championship as an expert commentator.
– This is probably the biggest surprise that has happened since Jesus wore shorts, he says in the Radiosporten broadcast.
Sweden is ready for the final of the World Handball Championship after defeating super favorite France 32-26 in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Egypt.
On Sunday, the final now awaits against Spain or Denmark.
We have to go back 21 years in time to find the last time a Swedish national handball team on the men’s side played in the World Cup final, and then also in Cairo.
Then Magnus Wislander was on the field when Blue and Yellow won with the odd goal against Russia.
“Since Jesus wore shorts”
Following the semi-final victory, the legend, now an expert commentator, became lyrical when he spoke of what he had just seen.
– This inexperienced team, what achievements it has made and with what joy it plays and what morale it has. They are so sharp in their finishes. It is absolutely unique, what a feat that they make them win this match, he says on Radiosporten and continues.
– They seem to thrive very well together. This is probably the biggest surprise that has happened in Swedish handball since Jesus wore shorts.
Question in Sportextra: Is it possible to compare with gold in 1990 (in Czechoslovakia)?
– No I dont think so. So we had a team that had been around for a while. There weren’t so many important nations then.
