There are two main reasons why 2020 was a golden year for bike thieves, says Lina Nilsson, an expert advisor to the SSF Theft Protection Association.
– In part, the winter was unusually mild. Without snow, there is nothing to stop people from riding their bikes. On the one hand, I think the corona pandemic played a big role. Many chose to ride a bike rather than commute, she says.
Most bicycle parts are stolen in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The highest percentage increase, 176 percent, is observed in the northern region. Statistics show that pure bicycle theft has increased the most in the Stockholm region: 21 percent compared to 2019.
The best way to avoid being exposed is to properly lock the bike, both on the frame and on the wheels, emphasizes Lina Nilsson.
– And take the saddle with you when you park. It is usually just a small knob that you turn to loosen it.
Saddles and wheels both attract thieves. But at the top of the criminals’ wish list are electric bike batteries.
– The number of electric bicycles has increased enormously and therefore battery theft has also become more common. It should be a matter of course to carry the battery, even if you are only going to buy a little quick.
