A 25-year-old man entered a high school in Varberg on Thursday morning, armed with knives and an ax.

He attacked two students who were attending the school’s introductory program. They both survived without serious injuries.

Just hours before the event, the now arrested man shared far-right content on his social networks.

Wearing a welding mask, the 25-year-old entered high school in Varberg, armed with knives and an ax.

Two students, both from the school’s introductory program, were confronted. One of them received minor injuries to his hand. The assailant then rushed away and went to a nearby square, where he was detained by the police.

The school crisis plan was activated

The arrest went smoothly. By then, the man had removed his welding mask, the clothes he wore to school, and all the weapons he carried. Despite this, the police have good reason for their suspicions, they announced at the press conference.

– The suspicions that we now have against him are aggravated assault, against the person who was injured, preparation for aggravated assault against strangers at school, aggravated illicit threat against the friend who was sitting next to the guy who was injured in the hand, he says . .

The man is also suspected of having set firebombs, so-called Molotov cocktails, at various locations in the school. Several hours after the event, the police bomb squad was on the scene to secure the area.

A 25-year-old man was arrested shortly after the attack.

Maria Gustafsson, head of Varberg’s education administration, says she received an alarm about the incident at 10.25.

“A little later it became clear that it was a bigger incident than we expected,” he says during the press conference.

The school’s crisis plan, which was revised in connection with the 2015 Trollhättan act of the school killer Anton Lundin Gustavsson.

– Many crisis plans throughout Sweden were reviewed after the Trollhättan incident and were also jointly designed after that incident, responds Maria Gustafsson.

The approximately 200 students who were at the school were sent home. In attendance were students from the special upper secondary school, the school’s vocational training program and the introductory program for immigrants. The rest, more than 1,000 students, were at home due to the corona pandemic.

The 25-year-old suspect shared, among other things, a clip about the act in Trollhättan.

Far-right content

The man who has now been arrested shared far-right content on his social media just hours before taking up arms and going to school in Varberg, something that the Expo newspaper, which examines far-right circles, revealed for the first time. .

The 25-year-old then shared a clip about the act in Trollhättan that in 2015 had Swedish schools, including Varberg’s, review their crisis plan.

He has also posted images saying “Dare to be a proud Swede and there is nothing to be ashamed of” and “White lives matter”, as well as clips related to the Nordic Nazi resistance movement.

Police cannot yet respond to the man’s motives, but say they will definitely investigate his digital presence.

The man has previously been convicted of arson.
