EU countries can sue Astra Zeneca

Irritation is great in the EU over Astra Zeneca’s announcement that smaller than promised deliveries are expected in the spring, due to “reduced capacity” at one of the company’s factories.

– The EU has invested billions to help develop the first vaccines against covid-19, highlights Commission President von der Leyen in an online speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) this year.

Requires notification

Among the EU countries, a joint action against Astra Zeneca is now being considered, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics announced, according to the Latvian news site Delfi.

– It is not right that they do not fulfill their commitments, especially Astra Zeneca, which has received enough money from the EU for research and development of a vaccine, says Rinkevics.

It is not clear whether it would be relevant for Sweden to participate in a possible joint lawsuit. The Minister of Social Affairs, Lena Hallengren (S), says, however, that it is “incredibly important” that vaccine manufacturers deliver vaccines in accordance with the agreements concluded.

“We hope that everything possible will be done to achieve this, and we are monitoring the issue closely together with other EU countries. When the messages are clear, it will be easier to investigate the possible effects,” says Lena Hallengren in a written comment.

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides was clearly upset when she demanded information on Monday about “exactly how many doses” Astra Zeneca has produced, what they have been given and when.

“We want our contracts to be fully honored,” Kyriakides told a news conference.

The decision awaits

However, no clear answers have yet been given, EU sources told Reuters news agency. However, Astra Zeneca has offered to move its first deliveries of its vaccine from February 15 to 7.

The company’s vaccine has yet to be approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), but it is generally expected to receive a positive message on Friday.
