The Estonia ferry sank in the Baltic Sea in September 1994. 852 people died. In September last year, a new documentary series about Estonia came out. It shows holes in the ferry that no one has seen before. The documentaries went by boat to the place where Estonia sank and filmed the ferry underwater with a diving robot.
But it is forbidden to be near Estonia. Those who died remain at sea and the government decided they would be protected. Therefore, the law of grave peace applies there. Those who violate the law of serious peace can be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of two years.
The documentaries say they haven’t done any crime. They left Germany with a German ship. Germany has not signed the peace law in Estonia. Sweden and several other countries have, but not Germany. Therefore, they did not think they were breaking the law. But the Swedish prosecutor says it doesn’t matter.
Two of the filmmakers were charged with the crime. The trial begins today. The court has used the film as evidence.
The documentary series has received a nice award because journalists and the government want to change the serious peace law in Estonia. They want the authority, the Swedish Accident Investigation Board, to be able to investigate the ferry again.
