On Friday, it became clear that the Norwegian municipality of Nordre Follo, which is near Oslo, has been affected by a local outbreak of the British variant of the virus. Among other things, two people are said to have died infected by the mutation in a nursing home in the municipality.
In Norway, a total of 55 cases of the British mutation have been discovered, of which 22 in the last 24 hours, according to VG.
Schools and stores expected to close
Overnight, the Norwegian government sat in a crisis meeting due to the spread of the infection and a press conference was announced at 09am on Saturday, where Health Minister Bent Høie is expected to present a series of new restrictions.
A source tells VG that the restrictions will be stricter than those that prevailed during the start of the pandemic last spring. Among other things, schools are expected to be closed and so are all non-vital stores.
– This is the opportunity we have, if this spreads to the rest of the country it can be very difficult to stop it. And then we can simply enter a third wave of infection, Espen Rostrup Nakstad, head of the Norwegian Health Directorate, to NRK.
“Trends in Hoarding and Congestion”
At Nordre Follo, there were reports late Friday that residents had started stockpiling merchandise ahead of an upcoming shutdown.
– It only took half an hour before we got reports from stores that there were trends in hoarding and congestion, says Trond Bentestuen, CEO of grocery store Rema 1000, according to E24.
