The trial of former US President Donald Trump will begin this week, beginning Feb. 8, said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will now present the indictment to the Senate on Monday. Republican and minority leader Mitch McConnell previously stated that he wanted the House of Representatives to deliver formal charges against Trump on January 28 and that the former president would have two weeks to prepare his defense.
– As I understand it, (the Supreme Court indictment) should reach us on Monday. According to Senate regulations, if the document has reached us, we must begin the trial immediately, McConnell said Friday.
Donald Trump is accused of inciting the rebellion, following the assault on the Capitol of the United States Congress on January 6.
