The new British variant of the coronavirus has taken hold in the Norwegian municipality of Nordre Follo, near the capital Oslo. Authorities are concerned about not knowing how it got there.

– This is the first example of the spread of this virus in Norway where we do not know the route of infection, says Health Minister Bent Høie to NRK.

At least two people, both over the age of 90 and residents of a retirement home, must have died with the new virus mutation, which must also have spread to a preschool.

Strict recommendations have now been introduced for residents of the area. Residents are urged not to leave the municipality and not stockpile supplies.

– Do not travel from the municipality, it is very important. Everyone who has planned trips to other municipalities should not complete the trip. It’s a strong recommendation from us, says City Chief Physician Kerstin Johnsen Myhrvold, writes NRK.

Tasks: record measures ahead

At 09:00 on Saturday, the Norwegian government will hold a press conference due to the development.

According to information to NRK then the government will introduce new strict restrictions that would mean that kindergartens and schools will be closed for several days in the Follo region, but also in Oslo. Shops and restaurants may also be closed until authorities have an overview of the situation.

The measures are described as the most severe in Oslo since the start of the pandemic.

– This weekend I want to urge the people of Oslo: Stay home, meet as few as possible. Think about extra time before you go to the store, Raymond Johansen, chairman of the Oslo city council, tells NRK.
