With an unfortunate keystroke, hundreds of thousands of files with the British police were deleted, including criminal records and evidence for ongoing investigations. Scandalous, says Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The culprit in the drama is believed to be software used by the police to delete files from computers that lacked legal support to store the data. The program seems to have gone haywire and began to remove the wild game, resulting in hundreds of thousands of files disappearing before the bug was discovered and fixed.
The accident, for which the British police data unit was blamed, took place on 10 January.
– Of course it is scandalous that the data has disappeared, at the moment we are trying to save what we can from this data, said Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a meeting with Parliament and then added:
– It is not yet possible to say how many police cases have been annulled because of what happened.
Therefore, it is not yet clear how extensive the damage is. However, Labor politician Keir Starmer cited a police investigator who estimated that more than 400,000 files and data containing 26,000 DNA samples and 30,000 fingerprints were missing.
