The global situation in terms of covid-19 remains dire, says Anders Tegnell, a state epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency, at today’s joint press conference.
– After being slightly lower numbers during the Christmas holidays, the increase now continues roughly in the same vein as before. So sadly, we probably haven’t had any tapering effect, he says.
In Sweden, there is a “cautious descent”, says Anders Tegnell, but he also notes that you have to be careful when drawing conclusions early.
The spread of the infection appears to have decreased more in the younger age groups. They appear to be increasing rapidly but are also regressing at a rapid rate, according to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
However, the pressure continues to be on healthcare as there is a certain delay. The number of deaths also remains high.
Skåne is the region most affected at the moment in terms of the spread of the infection.
– It’s hard to say if you see any decline yet, but it still seems to be at a high level, says Anders Tegnell.
In the Stockholm Region, on the other hand, something has fallen. In the Jämtland-Härjedalen and Dalarna regions, the dreaded spike in infection, which concerned them in connection with ski trips at Christmas and New Year, appears to have been absent.
– There were no drastic increases over the Christmas weekend. It worked quite well with skiing and there doesn’t appear to have been an extensive spread of the infection from this, Tegnell says.
Another 268 deaths from covid-19 have been reported. A total of 10,591 infected people have died in the country.
A total of 533 265 people in Sweden have been confirmed to be infected with covid-19.
A total of 147,000 people have been vaccinated against covid-19 in Sweden, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency.
– We want to continue to emphasize that it is important that the regions continue to use all the doses they can so that we obtain rapid protection, says Anders Tegnell.
The figure is based on data for the regions up to and including January 17.
New deaths in the authority’s statistics have occurred in most cases several days earlier, and deaths occurring in the near future are not included due to reporting delays. This means that the daily update shows the reported death rates, not the death rate for that particular day.
