The ongoing pandemic has contributed to a historic reduction in the number of operations carried out.
Last year 91,000 fewer operations were carried out than in 2019, according to figures prepared by the Swedish Perioperative Registry (Spor) for Ekot.
Severe pressure on care due to COVID-19 has meant that care has had to prioritize staffing for corona patients and has been forced to postpone other care, something that will take years to catch up.
– If we are going to compete, we need to increase our capacity by about ten percent and then it would take 20 months of work time, that is, almost two years. So this is no small feat and there is nothing that can be fixed quickly, Gunnar Enlund, chief physician at Uppsala University Hospital and head of Spor, tells Ekot.
The most affected are patients with planned procedures in orthopedics, eyes, ear-nose-throat and general surgery.
