More than 10,300 people have died from covid-19 in Sweden since the corona pandemic struck.
In the Västra Götaland region, more than 1,300 people have died in elderly care after becoming infected, according to SVT.
Johnny Magnusson (M), president of the regional board in Västra Götaland, visited Agenda on Sunday evening and then said:
– Unfortunately, around a third of those infected in special housing have not succeeded but have died. But I want to point out that about 70 percent have had the disease and have actually managed it. So health care has partly succeeded, even though it has devastated our special accommodation.
When asked why Västra Götaland failed to roll back the covid infection, Johnny Magnusson says:
– It is too early to say that it was this or that we did not achieve it. We have heard how the national guideline has been, it is not something we give in to.
“Tested in different ways”
He adds:
– In preventive work, we have tried it in different ways, for example, we have had distance education for personnel who work in the care of the elderly in hygiene care and other issues. But we have not been more successful than Stockholm or Skåne in the part that is going through a difficult time at the moment, so we will not beat our chests in any way here in Västra Götaland.
According to a review by Ivo based on the treatment of 847 covid patients in nursing homes, they were allowed to see a doctor physically. Instead, most medical exams have been done over the phone.
According to Johnny Magnusson (M), the region has noted several shortcomings after Ivo’s review, the biggest of which concerns record keeping.
– When it comes to personal contact with doctors, you are a bit divided. In case doctors go back and forth to nursing homes when the pandemic is happening, or you can work to have the medically responsible nurse who is on site in a phone conversation with the doctor do a joint assessment , here a visit is really necessary, or here we can do this over the phone. The medically responsible nurse knows her patients very well and, for the most part, the attending physician knows the patients well. I say most of the time, because that’s not always the case, says Johnny Magnusson in Agenda.
“Promise of honor and conscience”
At the same time, he believes that the elderly and the sickest have not been degraded as a result of a hard-working and pressured healthcare system.
– No, our leaders promise out of honor and conscience that no one has been demoted for that reason. But it is the case that if you are very ill and it is judged that you will not be able to be admitted to the intensive care unit and put on a respirator, then do not take that measure. It is a purely medical evaluation that I cannot go into and discuss, says Johnny Magnusson (M).
