Facebook bans ads for gun accessories and protective gear in the US, the company announces in a blog post. The ban is effective immediately until at least two days after Joe Biden took office as president on Wednesday of next week.

The decision comes after three US senators sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday asking him to permanently stop advertising for products that are clearly designed for use in armed conflict.

In the past, advertisements for weapons, ammunition and weapon parts, such as silencers, were not allowed on the platform. Now, the ban also covers accessories like safety vests and gun holsters.

On Friday, Facebook blocked the ability to create new events near places like the White House, the Capitol Parliament building and other government buildings, on the day of installation on January 20.
