Frölunda HC defeated Färjestad BK in Karlstad and Joel Lundqvist became a historic player with the most goals in Frölunda history.
Before Saturday’s meeting between Frölunda HC and Färjestad BK, all seven previous SHL matches (nine if 2019 Champions Hockey League matches are included) had ended with a home win. The last time Frölunda won at Löfbergs Arena was at the end of 2018, a trend of five consecutive losses (including the meeting of the CHL).
We witnessed a very entertaining match presentation, where high-quality, high-paced, upbeat hockey was on the agenda. Frölunda created in no time two really clear opportunities to take the lead, when first Stefan Elliott finished directly in a position of three against one and Johan Sundström just over a minute later was played free by Simon Hjalmarsson, but was disarmed by a very good Henrik’s support stop. Haukeland in the home team’s goal.
Instead, it was Färjestad who broke the deadlock and took the lead in the match. In a quick change, Daniel Viksten was released into the castle and raised the puck high on the roof of the net with just over two minutes remaining in first period.
The home team had a great opportunity to extend their lead early in the second half, when former Frölunda player Jacob Peterson landed a free kick, but Niklas Rubin was awake and saved the goal with the picking glove.
Rather than an extension of the lead, it was Frölunda who would get closer to the target. Outnumbered, Filip Johansson landed a good shot on a direct shot and tied 1-1 with 7:49 played in the second period.
Johansson just mentioned that he would make a new impression on the match, because just two minutes later he gained speed around Färjestadskassen, held the puck and unbuttoned it at the first cross and stood up for his second goal and Frölunda’s in the 2-2 match. -1.
– We can all go up a little higher. We are hard to find and so on, but my feeling is that it jiggles a bit too much back and forth, commented double scorer Filip Johansson during a break to C More and explained his second goal:
– Obviously it was my turn to score goals, fun. I had some fluidity at the beginning of the situation, I made a bad shot on the block and got the puck back. Got surface to go on, tried to find a passing path, but it didn’t show up right away so I actually sent it.
Joel Lundqvist historically
The home team started with energy in the third period, active against Rubin in Frölundakassen and sometimes settled in the attack zone for a while. But Frölunda did things decisively, did not give up and began to kill time on the offensive. In the wake of a numerical superiority, then-captain Joel Lundqvist stepped forward, splashed the puck 3-1 and not only closed the match, but also became historic in the Frölunda suit.
The captain’s ninth goal this season was his total of 237 goals at Frölunda, which means he surpassed Niklas Andersson’s club record of 236 and thus became the best scorer in the history of the Frölunda Hockey Club.
– It sure feels great. It took a few matches, but clearly fun to keep the record, commented Joel Lundqvist on C More after the final signal and explained how a player like him is standing there with the club’s goal record:
– It is important to stand in front of the goal and wait for it to rebound. No, but I know my strengths in my game. I’m not a different scorer, but I want to play hard, win the close matches both on the surface and on the edge. But then I had to play a lot of power in the last few years and I found the surfaces in front of the goal, of course it helps.
– I thought ‘I should have it’, that no one would screw up and send the record back or something. So I rushed to grab it, Joel finished, referring to the record.
