Shortly after midnight Swedish time, the White House released a five-minute clip of Donald Trump talking about the assault on the Capitol a week ago. He also spoke about concerns that his fans will do something similar or worse when Joe Biden is installed.
– Collective violence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement represents. No one who is truly my supporter would condone political violence or disrespect the police or the American flag, Trump said in the video.
– I want to be very clear. I condemn the violence we saw last week and, like you, I was shocked and saddened by the tragedy of last week.
Trump’s words during the storm
He did not mention in a word that the Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, had just brought him back to the Supreme Court. But what he said was the exact opposite of what he said a week ago, which is why he ended up in that situation again.
Before the storm, he delivered a speech to his supporters, in which he said that they would “stop the robbery” and “save democracy” by marching to the Capitol, where members of Congress would be persuaded to stop the election result:
– We can never recover the country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong.
During and after the storm, he urged the rebels to go home, but at the same time called them “special” and said he loved them. He also continued with baseless allegations of electoral fraud. On Twitter, he mocked Vice President Mike Pence, defending and praising those who stormed Congress:
“This is what happens when great patriots, who until now have been treated badly and unfairly, are maliciously robbed of a landslide victory in an election. Go home in peace and love. Remember this day forever.”
By Tuesday at the latest, he defended his remarks on the night of the uprising.
The FBI’s warning of new violence
It was clear that Trump was speaking from a script and went on to talk about reports that further demonstrations were being planned. He stressed that it is a right to demonstrate, but that it must be done peacefully.
The FBI has previously issued warnings that armed demonstrations and further storms of Congress buildings are planned across the country.
“I want to emphasize that there should be no violence, no crime, no vandalism,” said Trump, who with the help of 10 Republican members, did not mention a single word. He also did not mention the elections, nor did he admit that he has actually lost.
