Bang vs. Stordalen: bankrupt hotel | Your money

The crown crisis has hit the hotel and travel sector hard. For Petter Stordalen’s hotel group Nordic Choice, the breakdown has hit revenue a lot. Now, the Norwegian newspaper Aftenbladet is reporting that the Comfort hotel in Stavanger has declared bankruptcy, the first bankruptcy in the group’s history, according to Aftenbladet.

The newspaper claims that the hotel in Stavanger struggled with profitability even before the pandemic. The hotel has lost approximately NOK 12 million in the last five years.

– We cannot defend keeping the hotel alive with artificial respiration to cover deficits year after year. It is our duty as owners to say stop and take responsibility, Noridc Choice’s Torgeir Silseth tells Aftenbladet.

Reject the risk of more bankruptcies

Bankruptcy means that 13 to 14 people lose their job. Aftenbladet reports that Nordic Choice has had profitability issues with its other hotels in the Stavanger region. But Silseth claims it’s not relevant with more bankruptcies:

– Absolutely not. This is a unique opportunity. We have good control and good long-term solutions for the other eight hotels in Stavanger, Sandnes and Sola, he says.
