Frida Karlsson made a tactical error when she retired the entire race on Sunday at the Tour de Ski, according to former ski star Marit Bjørgen.
But another Norwegian ski expert disagrees.
– He did the only thing right, says Torgeir Bjørn.
Norwegian ski experts Bjørgen on TV2 and Bjørn on NRK disagree on the Swede’s tactic in the 10km freestyle race in Val Müstair.
Karlsson was in the lead for the entire race, which broke it at the end and American sneakers Jessica Diggins and Rosie Brennan were able to pass.
– Jessica made a smart run but you can see that Frida uses a lot of energy and wants to go first. First it made almost three and a half laps and then they stayed behind as they wanted. They were never invited to draw. It was a tactical boom for Frida, Bjørgen tells TV2.
Karlsson satisfied with the tactic
Karlsson told TT after the race that she was happy with her tactics.
– I don’t care much about today’s result. The important thing is the total and that’s where I got a good position, said Karlsson.
NRK expert Torgeir Bjørn agrees with Karlsson that the tactic, which was to get as far away from the rest of the field as possible, was a success precisely for the tour as a whole.
– In fact, I think Frida Karlsson solved it sensibly. The most important thing for her was to increase her biggest rivals in the total. By being tough to the end, she makes sure the gap with them widens significantly, she tells NRK.
“It may have settled”
– I mean that Frida Karlsson could have decided the Tour de Ski with the race on Sunday. With his late-stage strength, he doesn’t need to fear Diggins or Brennan right now.
Diggins is a total of five seconds ahead of Brennan and ten seconds ahead of Karlsson. Four Anamarija Lampic, Slovenia, and five Julia Stupak, Russia, are almost a minute behind. The tour continues on Tuesday with races at Italian Toblach.
