Almost half, 47 percent, of the members of the Swedish Medical Association say the stress level increased during the pandemic, according to a survey in which the association asked professional members during the month of December. The survey addresses various aspects of working conditions during the pandemic. 38 percent of those surveyed say they worked harder during the pandemic, and just over half of all those surveyed, 51 percent, believe they are not getting enough rest or recovery.
– These are worrying figures, says the president of the Medical Association, Sofia Rydgren Stale.
The Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Gävleborg regions activated the crisis agreement on December 23, and the Skåne Region activated the agreement on December 29.
– Our survey has been done before, and even half considered that they do not recover enough. We will not only be strong now, but also in 2021.
Few of the respondents have worked extensively with covid patients. But the pandemic affects a large part of the body. And the vast majority, 95 percent of those who responded to the survey, are concerned about the effects of care debt.
– There is great concern about how it will be in the future. It is extremely important for regions to ensure that doctors have the opportunity to rest and recover. We are asking for a strategy for that and how to deal with future care debt. The state must take greater responsibility for how caregivers cope with recovery and manage care debt.
14.6 percent of those surveyed work in the private sector. Of these, 6 percent claimed they were loaned to another employer (company or region) during the pandemic. Nearly 90 percent had not been asked to loan to another employer.
– It is remarkable that so few have asked. There has been a lot of discussion about helping. Still more people could have been expected to receive the question, says Sofia Rydgren Stale.
The survey was conducted by email to a panel of up to 7,000 members, and the results are based on responses from 2,584 of them, after responses from non-professionals were ranked. The panel is self-recruited from among members and is, according to the union, representative of the body in terms of age, gender, geography, and more.
