VAL MÜSTAIR / STOCKHOLM. Third overall and a good hitting position at the start of the hunt.
Then Oskar Svensson crashed in the third stage and lost two minutes and 20 places in goal.
– It’s hard, he says.
Rather unexpectedly, sprint specialist Oskar Svensson placed third overall after two Tour de Ski stages, after taking a pleasant sixth place during Saturday’s classic mass start.
But at the final start of the hunt in the Swiss Val Müstair, before the tour moved to the Italian Toblach, the 25-year-old collapsed.
It wasn’t entirely unexpected that it fell back on the hit list, but the drop was of the most serious kind.
Strong halfvarsson
Svensson came out 70 seconds behind Aleksandr Bolshunov and lost as time passed.
At the finish line he was three and a half minutes behind, in 23rd place.
– It was a tough day. I probably opened a little tight. I think I chose the wrong skis or the wrong wall. Today I had to work hard, but I did what I could. I tried to hold it together, but there was some distance anyway. It’s tough, Svensson tells Sportbladet.
Instead, Calle Halfvarsson became the best Swede at a nice 15th place. Thus, he moved up from 23rd in the results list. He lost just over half a minute to Bolshunov.
– One step forward, absolutely. I move up the list, but I am far behind in the total. In terms of time today, I have a good race. So we don’t have the material today. I am probably the one with the best skis of the Swedes and then I don’t think I have it right. William (Poromaa) has even worse. Today we have not succeeded. We’ll talk to the levees so it can change in front of the ladies, says Halfvarsson.
Bolshunov came out with lone majesty and won as planned by a 53-second margin against compatriot Alexander Maltsev. Frenchman Maurice Manificat finished third.
