In addition to the Astra Zeneca vaccine against covid-19, the Indian Medicines Agency has also quickly approved the Covaxin developed in the country.
Now the country is expected to begin its planned mass vaccination within a week. It aims to have vaccinated 300 million of the 1.3 billion inhabitants by mid-year.
The Astra Zeneca vaccine, developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford, will play a key role in the vaccination program. The Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has already prepared more than 50 million doses of the vaccine.
Covaxin will be administered initially on a more limited scale as there are no complete data on its effectiveness yet. The vaccine was developed by Indian Bharat Biotech in collaboration with a state research institute.
The director of the Swedish Medicines Agency, VG Somani, assures that the two approved vaccines are considered “one hundred percent” safe.
