Doctors warning: infection may increase again in January

The number of new cases in Sweden has not yet started to decline, but we may have reached a plateau phase.

The Swedish Public Health Agency said in a forecast earlier this year that the peak of the infection could have reached in mid-December.

At the same time that vaccination began in Sweden, doctors and other experts are now warning that we may see an increase in January again.

Doctors warn: then the infection can increase again

Peter Nolskog, Västra Götaland’s assistant infection control physician, said on Friday that the Christmas and New Year weekend can be seen in the statistics in a couple of weeks.

– You will not see a spike due to New Years Eve. People become infected at work and when they meet in private life. I’m most afraid of the whole Christmas and New Years weekend in total, I don’t think you feel one and one or two and two, he said and continued:

– You’ve probably met several relatives and we can probably see that in the next few weeks. I don’t think it is possible to point out New Year’s Eve as the cause of more cases, but I think it can be linked to the Christmas and New Year’s weekend in general.

Chief physician Johan Styrud also expressed concern for the next few weeks.

– Maybe not just because of New Years Eve, but because of the fact that you’ve been out a lot and can see an effect. All of December has been extremely stressful. We have a large number of applicants in hospitals who are sick. The crown has not settled.

– The risk is that in two or three weeks we will see a new wave of high numbers in Stockholm hospitals.

“Is there a risk that the infection will spread properly?”

Before Christmas weekend, Joacim Rocklöv, professor of epidemiology and public health sciences at Umeå University, told TT.

– I think there is a risk that the infection will start to spread properly again if we do not keep travel and private meetings at a proper level on weekends.

Former state epidemiologist Annika Linde believes there were “some trips” during Christmas, which may have a clear and negative effect.

– So it can be a new wave with greater spread when everyone comes back and gets together, with new viruses that they have contracted in different places. This is what we often see in connection with, for example, flu epidemics, which take on a new momentum after Christmas.

Warning from the chief doctor after the images: “New wave in a few weeks”

Images from the New Year celebrations show a crowd in Södermalm in central Stockholm, and according to police, around 3,000 people gathered at Götaplatsen in Gothenburg.
