The Texas senator’s decision runs against top Senate Republicans, who believe the Senate effort Wednesday is primarily ceremonial in nature.

In a statement, Cruz and 10 other senators said they would reject voters from states accused by Donald Trump of electoral fraud. They are also demanding that Congress introduce a further review of the election results in the selected states.

“Once this is done, each state will evaluate the Commission’s findings and then convene a special legislative session that can confirm a change in its vote, if necessary,” they said in a statement according to Reuters.

They have not yet specified what states they are.

“We are not naive”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Joe Biden on the victory as early as December 15 and has since urged his party colleagues in the Senate not to protest the January 6 result.

Ted Cruz and the other protesting Republicans admit in the statement that their protest is likely to fail.

“We are not naive. We hope that most, if not all, Democrats and probably more than a few Republicans will vote differently,” they said in the statement.

“Vi ses i Washington DC”

Donald Trump has repeatedly rejected allegations of widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, but has yet to present any evidence as evidence.

On Friday, however, he wrote on Twitter that the evidence will be presented in Washington DC on January 6, the same day the Senate is expected to approve the election result.

“See you in Washington DC,” Trump wrote.
