Several countries in Europe that appeared to have declines in both the spread of infection and deaths in the fall are now showing increasing trends. State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell believes there are many indications that Sweden will follow a similar path, with a third wave.
– There is a trend towards a new wave in Europe, says Anders Tegnell and continues:
– The Swedish curve has risen later, but is almost on par with other countries.
At the same time, Tegnell believes that it is difficult to draw conclusive conclusions about the spread of the infection during the Christmas holidays, as the information has slowed down.
– It is difficult to make an assessment of Sweden in recent days. But we can say that it is still a difficult situation, says Anders Tegnell.
More cases of British infection
Anders Tegnell also announced at the press conference that eleven cases of the British mutated virus have been confirmed in Sweden, in addition to one case of the South African mutation.
– There are connections to travel from South Africa and the United Kingdom.
– This also shows that it is not enough to demonstrate a negative PCR test upon admission because these cases have been able to pass, says Anders Tegnell.
Tegnell emphasizes the importance of continuing to practice self-isolation.
Medical care is nearing the breaking point
Sweden is approaching the top of the plateau for what medical care can handle. It is in particular the situation of the staff that will be decisive in terms of the amount of care that is required. For this reason, five regions have also chosen to activate their crisis agreements.
– We can all help the health system to deal with this if, instead of finding loopholes in the regulations, we are helped to follow the spirit in them, says Thomas Lindén, department head of the National Board of Health and Welfare.
