The Finnish team is already seriously injured by desertions even before leaving for the Tour de ski. Iivo Niskanen, Joni Mäki and Ristomatti Hakola never got off to a good start.
In addition, it was a big question mark for Finland’s best skier, Krista Pärmäkoski, who struggled with an illness during the fall.
Pärmäkoski decided in the last minute to start, one finishing a modest 21st in Friday’s sprint.
Thus, Finnish high hopes were pinned on the experienced Kerttu Niskanen, but on Saturday morning a heavy message arrived:
Niskanen breaks the Tour de ski.
The management of the Finnish team announces on Twitter that Niskanen has fallen ill. But no, it’s not about the crown.
Instead, Niskanen has suffered from a stomach flu.
Kerttu Niskanen was tested and also had to do a covid test on Saturday morning, which turned out to be negative.
The 32-year-old has two individual World Cup victories on his list of merits. One of them only during the Ski Tour, but it dates back to 2014.
Kerttu Niskanen finished 39th in Friday’s sprint.
