I stopped smoking almost a year ago. Unfortunately I have gained weight, almost 10 kilos.
Why is that? And what should I do to get off?

Dietitian Responds: Easy to Gain Weight
Hello Anna-Maria! How good that you managed to quit smoking! That in itself is always a health benefit. That being said, I understand that it is frustrating. It’s easy to gain weight when you quit smoking, and there are several things that come into play. One is that smoking, or rather nicotine, increases metabolism somewhat while suppressing your appetite. Another is that you can now choose a coffee muffin instead of a cigarette, or you are simply hungrier. Also, the very behavior of not smoking is something that can give you a feeling of restlessness and craving for things you have not eaten before.

There are many theories, but my advice is that you try to understand what made you gain weight. Can you see any obvious changes or do you think you are eating as usual? One trick is to cut back on portions, eat slowly, and feel full. Fill your plate with crisp, high-fiber veggies and eat them before your regular meal to make eating less easier.
