As in previous years, Danish Queen Margrethe delivered a speech on New Year’s Eve. It is a long and appreciated tradition in Denmark with a large part of the population participating in its message.
This year it was mainly about the corona pandemic. But the queen also wanted to highlight the positive parts. Among other things, he praised the care staff and stated that the climate has benefited from the pandemic.
– The climate has improved during the crisis, it is worth noting. It is important that we continue to take care of our climate, he said in the speech.
Teacher: “Not entirely true”
But this is not a claim supported by Peter Langen, professor of climate modeling at Aarhus University.
– I bounced, because in reality it is not entirely true that the weather has improved, he tells DR.
He claims that the reduction in travel during the pandemic has led to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, but that this is too small a difference and too short a time for it to affect the climate.
– To have a measurable effect from a shutdown, you must have a reduction in CO 2 emissions that lasts for decades. Otherwise nothing changes.
Queen Margaret has spoken openly about the climate crisis several times before, and has also come under fire for precisely that kind of statement. In an interview with Kvällsposten 2019, he said that there is sometimes some panic in today’s climate debate.
– Some people think it is very critical and then the reaction becomes a little panic. You must keep a cool head. I think that’s very good. Don’t cool off, but keep a cool head.
