Messy New Years in many places

New Year’s Eve and nights have been rough in many parts of the country, despite calls to stay home and avoid major celebrations. Various accidents, crimes and riots have been reported.

– We have had many conversations about fireworks. Rockets are fired at people and buildings. We get calls from across the region, even the smallest towns, says Evelina Olsson, Police Region South press spokesperson.

The Southern Region had received 357 fireworks-related calls just before 01:00 on New Year’s Eve in the past 24 hours, more than 100 alarms than at the same time last year.

At Möllevångstorget in Malmö, people gathered for a traditional New Year’s celebration with rockets fired both high and low, despite calls to avoid the crowds.

In Sollentuna, north of Stockholm, young people wearing mouth guards fired rockets at the police a few hours before noon. The police have made a blue light sabotage report.

Many minor fires are also reported, often set by rockets and fireworks.
