The police are preparing for New Year’s Eve, which can be much quieter than usual, or more complicated.

It is very difficult to predict, says Helena Boström Thomas in the police.

The police are equipping themselves with additional resources for New Year’s Eve, something that is normally done on major holidays like the New Year.

-This year it is very difficult to predict what the night will be like. One can imagine that it will be quieter because the restaurants are closed, at the same time it can be messier precisely because the restaurants are closed, says Helena Boström Thomas from the Stockholm Police Press Service.

Spontaneous crowds

Many people also stay in Stockholm, who might otherwise travel on vacation.

There are also no major public events this year, unlike in other years, he adds.

-But they can be spontaneous crowds. If there are many house parties, it is one thing that can cause problems, he says and continues:

– Possibly there will be more fireworks than usual, which can be a risk when people are under the influence of alcohol, says Boström Thomas, who assures that he has received information that more fireworks have been sold than usual.

-It may be that people want to meet in parks or viewpoints, places that have a symbolic value, which does not happen on a normal weekend. Many may want to stand on the Golden Bridge, but we don’t know. Or people stay inside, says Helena Boström Thomas.

“Generally tense”

The Halland and Västra Götaland counties police are also additionally equipped for New Year’s Eve.

-The New Year is a weekend that is usually exhausting for us, so we have more staff than a normal weekend. We have a good staff, but it might just be a quieter New Years. We are prepared for what happens, says Anna Göransson in the police press service.

As there are restrictions on nightlife, Göransson believes it can be a quieter New Year’s Eve than usual. At the same time, he says that the police are acting because they may have a lot to do.

-We will be well visible in the streets and squares and we will work to create security. We will be in a place where people can meet and where there can be fireworks, says Anna Göransson.
