The rescue effort in Norway continues with constant force.

Ten people are still missing and there are fears that they will be trapped under the landslides.

One of the missing is a child, according to police.

– The more time passes, the worse the odds, says task leader Dag Andre Sylju, to TV2.

It’s been more than a day since the massive landslide occurred in Ask, Gjerdrum municipality, a couple of miles outside of Oslo.

About 1,000 residents have been evacuated and 10 people are still missing and feared to remain under the landslides. Yesterday, police received phone calls from callers who said they were trapped under shingles and insulation.

At 8 a.m. on Thursday, the task leader announced that they were fighting the clock.

– We are still in an ongoing rescue operation, so our hope is to find people alive. But time is important throughout the effort. The longer the time passes, the worse the odds, says the leader of the police task Dag Andre Sylju, to several Norwegian media during the morning.

It was previously announced that one of the missing was a child. After that, the number was reduced to ten missing people and according to VG, the police do not want to comment if there are children among those who have not yet been found.

Risk of more landslides and landslides

The extensive rescue work has continued throughout the night with helicopters, drones and thermal cameras. The racial area has been divided into different zones. But the circumstances of the place make the effort difficult. Only helicopters could be used in the search, since the area is not yet secured to enter on foot or by vehicle. At the same time, the police fear that more houses will collapse and that there is a risk of further landslides.

– Experts who surveyed the area have said the landslide is still in motion. There are still buildings right on the edge of the ravine that we actually expected to collapse overnight, he says.

Severe weather conditions

During the night, a dog was rescued from one of the demolished houses using a thermal imaging camera and a helicopter. The Police announced this morning that the search operation in the inner zone, the red zone, has ended.

– It is not yet possible to enter the area with crew on foot. We tried to lower a defense baton and a police dog handler into a building in the race area. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked, says Dag Andre Sylju.

Darkness and bad weather make work difficult that will last at least all of Thursday.

– We have challenges regarding light. This makes the job demanding, but we do what we can based on the terms and conditions we have, he says.
