Vaccination against covid-19 began little by little on Sunday.
The day after receiving the injection, an 85-year-old man with several patients died of cardiac arrest at a special residence in the Kalmar County region. The man’s relatives were notified the same day.
– We really don’t have any direct suspicions of connection. But since we are required to report deviant events closely related to a new treatment to the Medical Products Agency, we have done so, says chief physician Mattias Alvunger.
He believes that the group that gets the vaccine first is the oldest and the sickest.
– It is clear that people in this group are at risk of serious illness and death even without the vaccine.
At the same time, the region is alert and vigilant for possible reactions now that they have begun a new comprehensive vaccination.
– I don’t know how big the risk is. This was the first start-up in our region and we are watching for deviations.
The Medical Products Agency declares that the cause of death has not yet been determined and that it is currently not possible to say whether the death is related to vaccination.
– There is nothing in the studies that shows that the vaccine would cause cardiac arrest, says Ulla Wändel Liminga, subject area manager in the department of drug safety at the Agency for Medical Products.
This is the second suspected side effect reported in Sweden. Earlier in the week, the Medical Products Agency received a report that an elderly woman had suffered a slight swelling and itching in her throat shortly after the injection. According to TT, the reaction occurred about 15 minutes after vaccination.
– Cortisone and antihistamine were administered, a routine treatment for hypersensitivity reactions. It goes back and as far as we know it has no lasting symptoms, says Ulla Wändel Liminga.
The Medical Products Agency follows up all suspicious side effects and will review the cases to see if there may be a link. The reports are also submitted to the European EudraVigilance adverse reaction database and form part of the basis for joint pharmacovigilance in the EU.
Ulla Wändel Liminga believes that there will be deaths, because those who receive the vaccine are already fragile and may die from other causes.
– It would be quite strange if no one died close to vaccination.
