The bells of the 13 cathedrals of the country will ring for ten minutes starting at 6 pm on New Year’s Eve.
The idea is to remind us of the people who died during the pandemic, sometimes without their closest ones being present. Funerals and memorial services have also been restricted by restrictions.
The sound of the bell will be an opportunity to gather feelings and thoughts about the pandemic, which has changed our lives this year.
“The fight against the virus and its mutations will continue well into 2021 and will require perseverance and courage,” said Archbishop Antje Jackelén.
Other churches can also participate in the pandemic victim call, if the congregations wish.
New Years bells at midnight are unaffected by the extra chime. Therefore, the cathedrals will ring twice at intervals of a few hours.
It is very unusual for all cathedrals to make a common extra ring. But it happened after the tsunami in Asia in 2004, when cathedrals held memorial services for the victims of the disaster.
